Treasury Yield Curve Analysis

The 30-year Treasury yield stood at 5.27 percent on Wednesday, inching higher from 5.18 percent one week earlier. This long-term rate has been creeping upward as the week progressed, holding steady at 5.27 percent over the past two days after ticking up from 5.26 percent earlier in the period. The 30-year rate was among the higher-moving segments of the curve this week, reflecting continued upward pressure on the longest maturity securities.

The entire yield curve shifted higher compared to last Wednesday, with rates climbing across all maturities. The 2-year rate rose to 4.39 percent from 4.19 percent a week prior, while the 10-year moved to 4.79 percent from 4.66 percent. Intermediate maturities like the 5-year reached 4.54 percent and the 7-year touched 4.66 percent, both showing solid weekly increases. Even the shortest maturities climbed, with the 4-week rate increasing to 3.83 percent from 3.80 percent and the 3-month rate moving to 3.92 percent from 3.85 percent.

Looking back 30 days to late July, the curve has moved upward across most tenors. The 30-year rate has climbed from 5.15 percent to its current 5.27 percent. The 10-year has risen from 4.67 percent to 4.79 percent over the same period. Shorter maturities tell a slightly different story, with the 2-year at 4.39 percent now versus 4.31 percent a month ago, a more modest gain than what longer maturities have experienced.

The yield curve remains firmly upward sloping, with rates increasing consistently from the shortest to the longest maturities. The 4-week rate at 3.83 percent sits well below the 30-year at 5.27 percent, creating a steep curve by historical standards. The gap between the 2-year and 10-year stands at roughly 40 basis points, wider than the 36 basis point spread seen last week. A month ago, that same 2-year to 10-year spread was narrower, suggesting the curve has been steepening gradually as longer-term rates climb faster than shorter-term ones.
