Treasury Yield Curve Analysis

The 30-year Treasury yield climbed to 4.78 percent on Tuesday, up from 4.70 percent one week ago. This marks a notable increase for the longest maturity, reflecting continued shifts in the broader rate environment. Investors have watched longer-term yields move higher over the past week, with the 30-year posting one of the larger gains among benchmark maturities.

Rates across the curve moved higher compared to last week, with the 10-year reaching 4.15 percent from 4.06 percent. The 5-year rose to 3.73 percent while the 7-year climbed to 3.93 percent, both showing increases of roughly 10 basis points over the week. Short-term rates remained relatively stable, with the 3-month holding at 3.71 percent and the 6-month at 3.68 percent. The 2-year moved to 3.57 percent, up from 3.51 percent last Tuesday.

Looking at the past month, the curve has shifted in an interesting pattern. Long-term rates have actually declined compared to late January, when the 30-year stood at 4.83 percent and the 10-year at 4.24 percent. The 5-year dropped from 3.81 percent a month ago to 3.73 percent today. However, shorter maturities have moved differently, with the 2-year rising from 3.53 percent to 3.57 percent over the same period. The 7-year fell more sharply, dropping from 4.03 percent a month ago to 3.93 percent today.

The yield curve shows some notable patterns when comparing different segments. The short end remains relatively flat, with the 3-month and 2-year separated by only about 14 basis points. The middle of the curve shows a steeper climb, with the 5-year at 3.73 percent sitting notably above the 2-year at 3.57 percent. The long end continues its upward trajectory, reaching 4.78 percent at 30 years. The curve shape has shifted compared to both last week and a month ago, with the short end holding steady while intermediate and longer maturities have moved higher week-over-week, though the very long end has declined over the longer monthly horizon.
